Leading orchestras in America had "all-Gershwin" programs. The popular hits from the opera ("I Loves You, Porgy", " Summertime") maintained circulation on the radio. The song that launched Simone into the public eye was one that fit audience expectations of black women musicianship." Īfter Gershwin's death in 1937, Porgy and Bess was revived in New York in 1942, a production which toured as well. Sarah Tomlinson claimed "while 'I Loves You, Porgy' was one of eleven tracks on her album, it was the only song that had previously been popularised by black women musicians. Nina Simone's release of "I Loves You, Porgy" and conversations surrounding black representation were contemporaneous. Greenwald, chair of the department of music history at New England Conservatory and editor of the Oxford Handbook of Opera, wrote that Bess's solo "requires the legato power of a Puccini heroine". On the technicality of Bess's role in the duet, Helen M. Gershwin had originally changed the title from Porgy to Porgy and Bess to emphasise the romance between the two title characters and accommodate operatic conventions. Once again, it is Porgy who guides Bess back to the home key, re-establishing F major with a half cadence at the end of the B and C sections." Gershwin thereby subverts the rondo forms as a guaranteed sign of confidence and stability into an indication of the situation's volatility. Latham contends that Gershwin's experimental use of simple rondo form with the main theme as the refrain echoes the tension between Porgy and Bess in the duet, "It is as if Bess is clinging to the refrain for dear life, afraid that if she wanders too far from it, she will lose Porgy's love for good. Naomi André writes: "Coming out of a time when minstrelsy, radio shows such as Amos 'n' Andy, and other media where white actors, singers, and novelists relied on negative stereotypes of black people, Porgy and Bess sounds awkward and dated, at best, to many people today." Music Įdward D. The folk-opera has been accused of linguistic subordination, where differences of language commonly associated with socio-economically oppressed groups are viewed as linguistic deficits. The representation of the characters' speech in Porgy and Bess is contentious. Musicologist Lawrence Starr writes, "she possesses profound self-understanding, and understanding of others, and yet cannot use this knowledge to really help herself do anything more than survive (which of course is already more than Carmen or Marie)." Īfter the folk-opera's premiere, Duke Ellington said "The times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms", which was seconded by Ralph Matthews of the Baltimore Afro-American: "The singing, even down to the choral and ensemble numbers, has a conservatory twang." In contrast to the fatal tragedy of Bizet's Carmen and Berg's Marie, Gershwin's Bess is a psychological tragedy. The re-addition of this stanza into the opera proved crucial in demonstrating Bess' feelings towards Porgy and Crown, as well as showing the extent of Bess's self-understanding. During the early stages of the opera, Bess' opening stanza was cut out. In the lyrics Bess is asking Porgy to stop her from going with Crown, her abusive lover. Analysis Lyrics Leontyne Price as Bess (1953) The song was popularised by Nina Simone's adaptation from her debut album, Little Girl Blue. Bess has a lover, Crown, who is abusive and continually seduces her. The duet occurs in act 2, scene 3, Catfish Row, where Porgy promises Bess that he will protect her. They recorded the song on volume 2 of the album Selections from George Gershwin's Folk Opera Porgy and Bess in 1942. It was performed in the opera's premiere in 1935 and on Broadway the same year by Anne Brown and Todd Duncan. " I Loves You, Porgy" is a duet from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. Song from the opera Porgy and Bess I Loves You, Porgyĭuet from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin Preparing a site to stock CO 2 can take up to 10 years, so storage could become a serious bottleneck for both CCS and DAC development. "It's a huge challenge but it's not unprecedented," University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Gregory Nemet told AFP, citing other technologies, including solar panels, that have scaled up dramatically in a matter of decades. Plans for at least 130 DAC facilities are now at various stages of development, according to the IEA. The first million-tonne-per-year plant-developed by Occidental Petroleum in Texas-is scheduled to come online in the United States next year. To keep the mid-century net-zero target in play, CCS will need to divert 1.3 billion tonnes a year from power and industry-30 times more than last year-by 2030, according to the IEA.ĭAC must remove 60 Mt CO 2 per year by that date, several thousand-fold more than today.īut the nascent industry is burgeoning with new actors. Scaling upīoth CCS and DAC must be massively scaled up if they are to play a significant role in decarbonizing the global economy. Less than 30 DAC plants have been commissioned worldwide, and those in operation only capture about as much CO 2 in a year-10,000 tonnes-as the world emits in about 10 seconds. If all projects in the pipeline were realized, CO 2 capture capacity would expand eight-fold by 2030, but so far only five percent of announced projects have reached the final investment decision stage. In the fall of 2023, there were some 40 commercial-scale facilities worldwide applying carbon capture technology to industry, fuel transformation or power generation, isolating a total of 45 million tonnes (Mt) of CO 2, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The world's largest CCS plant, the Petra Nova facility in Texas, was mothballed three years after opening in 2017.īut the looming climate crisis and generous government subsidies have revived interest in CCS for the power sector and beyond. So far, bolting CCS facilities onto existing coal- and gas-fired power plants and then storing the captured CO 2 underground has proven technically feasible but uneconomical. Rather, oil and gas companies inject CO 2 into mature oil fields to extract crude that would otherwise remain inaccessible. The fossil fuel industry has been using CCS since the 1970s, but not to prevent CO 2 from leaching into the atmosphere. "If the CO 2 is utilized, then it is not removal," said Oliver Geden, a senior fellow at the German Institute for International Security Affairs. But some of that CO 2 will inevitably seep back into the air. Once isolated using either CCS or DAC, CO 2 can be used to make products such as building materials or "green" aviation fuel. The concentration of carbon dioxide in ambient air is only 420 parts per million (about 0.04 percent), so corralling CO 2 with DAC is very energy intensive. On the other hand, DAC extracts CO 2 molecules already there, making it a "negative emissions" technology.ĭAC can therefore generate credits for companies seeking to offset their greenhouse gas output-but only if the captured CO 2 is permanently stored, such as in depleted oil and gas reservoirs or in saline aquifers. What it isĬCS siphons off CO 2 from the exhaust, or flue gas, of fossil fuel-fired power plants as well as heavy industry.ĬO 2 makes up about 12 percent of these emissions from a coal-fired power plant, while in steel and cement production it is typically double that.ĬCS by itself only prevents additional carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Here's a primer on what they are and how they differ. Thursday, a group of major energy companies including Britain's BP and France's TotalEnergies said they have awarded £4 billion ($5.1 billion) worth of contracts for a gas power plant in Britain to be equipped with CCS. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and direct air capture (DAC) are both complex industrial processes that isolate CO 2, but these newly-booming technologies are fundamentally different and often conflated. This can be achieved by exposing them to sunlight or moonlight, burying them in salt, or using smoke to purify them. Like all divination techniques, it is advised to cleanse the runes of any residual energies before using them. Simply draw them wherever you like as a lucky charm, carve them into candles, add them to your spellwork, or utilize them in any other way you feel inspired to.īelow, we’ll go over the 3 basic steps of how to do a rune reading: cleanse your runes, think of question and (intuitively) draw, and then interpret! You can use them as independent sigils or as part of a reading. Once you have your chosen objects, start writing, painting, or engraving a runic letter on each one. You can even create your own by collecting 24 items of comparable size, and if you can’t locate any, create your own out of clay, wood, or paper. You can choose classic runes carved onto stone or wood, runes on cards (which I prefer), or runes on various crystals. Today, choosing each rune stone based on intuition and arranging them into a “spread” is the favored approach for reading runes, which is more like reading a Tarot or oracle card. Only the runes that were facing right-side-up could would then be read turned-over runes were often ignored. In order to avoid humanly prejudice or bias from influencing a reading, rune readers would cast or draw the runes onto a white silk cloth while keeping their eyes directed upward towards the Gods. In ancient times, it was considered to be a sort of divine practice, a communication with the Gods. However, the art of reading runes still took place. If they were to be used in any sort of “mystical” way, it was often for the crafting of magical amulets and talismans, although they were believed to be just like any other letter, carrying no significant, special meaning of their own. Historically, runes were more commonly utilized as a traditional, normal alphabet, just like Latin or Greek. In general, the following list of symbols and their meanings, divided by the Freyr, Heimdall, and Tyr Aetts’: There are many different possible meanings assigned to the runes since they are such an ancient language and because using them was a practice cloaked in mystery in a time before many people had access to written language. It has runes for things like birth, neighborhood, intuition, and inheritance. The last set of runes, Tyr’s Aett, shows how our spirituality and heritage are evolving. The following collection of runes (Heimdall’s Aett), which includes runes like barriers, fate, and harvest/abundance, speaks of our maturing and growing. As a result, it contains runes that stand for things like vigor, communication, and cattle-the primary sign of riches in those days. The cycle of life is depicted in these major groups.įinding our way in the material world and acquiring material belongings are symbolized by the first set of runes, or in Freyr’s Aett. Three equal groups of eight runes each make up the Elder Futhark runic alphabet: Freyr’s, Heimdall’s, and Tyr’s (where “aett” stands for “family”). The runic alphabet typically consists of 24 letters, but some sets also include a blank stone known as Odin’s Rune, which is believed to represent things that are still to be known. The Norse and other Northern European societies believed that runes held powerful divinatory abilities and as such were regarded very seriously. Runes help us to access our inner knowledge and intuitive abilities as well as our Spirit Guides and the collective unconscious for unveiling hidden wisdom and guidance. The word “rune” actually means secret, mystery, and whisper. Like hieroglyphics, each rune has a meaning in addition to being a letter.īecause rune stones had a rich and magical past, they were revered and handled with the utmost care. Today, we utilize rune stones as a form of divination, comparable to Tarot cards. They occasionally also imply “miracle.” It can also mean “poetry” in Finnish and “to speak” in Lithuanian. The word “ rune” derives from a Germanic word that means “mystery” or “secret,” and related words can also be found in Welsh, Old English, Old Irish, and Old English dialects. Similar to our own alphabet used today, runic writings have been discovered on stone blocks, wood, bones, and other artifacts to record business transactions, judicial and political affairs, in divination and magic, on headstones as protection charms and talismans, as public art, and as the handmade glyphs of craftsmen. Before Latin became widely used throughout Europe in approximately the 1st century A.D., a proto-Norse language, known as the runic alphabet, was already in use.
